More than 18,000 overseas IT professionals were granted entry permits to the UK last year - almost two thirds of them from India - as the Government sought to ease the skills shortage.

IT staff from 116 different countries joined UK-based companies during 2000.

Last October the Government introduced a fast-track work permit applications for IT professionals, prompting a positive response from employers (Computer Weekly, 5 October 2000) .

In November e-minister Patricia Hewitt made a trip to India, where she told potential IT migrants, "Come on in, the water's lovely". In January she travelled to China to make the same appeal.
