Capgemini has reported a drop in sales and profits in 2009 but said its outsourcing business helped offset a considerable slowdown in its consulting and IT services business.

The company's profit was €178m in 2009 compared to €451m in 2008. The company's sales dropped by about €340m to €8.37bn in 2009 compared to the previous year.

Capgemini said its consulting and IT services business slowed considerably in 2009 after demonstrating "remarkable resistance" to the downturn the previous year.

It said, "We successfully contained the decrease in revenues thanks to the stability of its outsourcing business, which often represents a solution particularly well adapted to the new concerns of clients and also its recently strengthened presence in the public sector as well as the energy and utilities sector, where demand remained stronger."
