Greater investment needed to reap virtualisation ROI

Resellers should be advising customers to build on their virtualisation investments if they want to achieve greater return on the expenditure they have made on the technology

The opportunities for resellers in the virtualisation market continue to emerge as more customers start to recognise they need to make further investments in the technology.

Although a lot of the focus in the market has been on green field sites it is becoming increasingly apparent that existing customers need to spend more to get a greater return on investment.

"The percentage of servers virtualised is still much smaller than the number of physical servers in the estate. Organisations have a long way to go to increase levels of virtualisation and to continue to reap the benefits," said Dave Chalmers, chief technologist, vice president of HP Enterprise Group, EMEA.

"We are rapidly seeing that virtualisation of the server is the beginning, not the end. Virtualisation technologies are being developed and deployed across rest of the IT infrastructure, including much virtualisation in the storage environment, and now starting in the network environment," he added.

VMware also recently found that resellers were predicting 38% of those companies that have embraced virtualiation will have 80% of their businesses virtualised.

The research was undertaken for VMware by Canalys and its principal analyst Alastair Edwards pointed out that even in a tough economic market the cost savings of virtualisation meant that it was still a compelling argument.

“Virtualization is being seen as a solution that delivers cost savings as well as broader business benefits; as a result, within two years, channel partners predict that SMBs are planning a rapid rate of virtualization adoption, with the majority of SMBs realising the benefits heavily virtualized environments can deliver. Savvy organisations are those making the connection between IT investment and more holistic business priorities, and are virtualising today to gain competitive advantage," he says.
