Lincolnshire county council has launched what it believes is the world’s first local government podcasting service, broadcasting material converted from text on its website.
Local residents can subscribe to the podcasts, which convert RSS feeds of the council’s website from text to audio. The podcasts will then download audio to subscriber's media players automatically whenever they go online.
Users can then listen to the podcast on a PC, laptop, mp3 playeror mobile device using software such as iTunes.
The council hopes its podcasting service will allow it to take advantage of developments announced by mobile phone manufacturers that will allow the next generation of mobiles to receive podcasts directly.
Deputy council leader Peter Robinson said, “This is a significant step forward for our council. I hope this new technology will add another useful communication channel with the people of Lincolnshire.”
