EC seeks recommendations for telecoms R&D budget

Ian Grant

Where in the telecommunications ecosystem should the European Commission spend its R&D money?

That's the question at the heart of a €350,000 request for tenders to spend a year exploring the future of European technology providers in the global telecomms market.

The commission wants a detailed qualitative and quantitative analysis of the ongoing trends of the global communications infrastructure market, the restructuring of the sector supply and value chains and the evolution of demand.

This will cover the supply and value chains at the equipment and service components levels, with reference to the increasing integration of components to deliver new systems and new types of services.

The second aim is to guide the commission on where to spend its money and develop or preserve a competitive advantage. This should emerge from a comparative analysis of current R&D strategies adopted by main international competitors of the EU in the telecommunications sector, it said.

The deadline is 12 May 2011.
