IBM has added electronic data transfer capabilities, or native
replication, to its
ProtecTIER
Deduplication product line.
The software is designed to improve data protection and business
continuity. It electronically transmits de-duplicated data to
remote sites, reducing bandwidth demand and eliminating the need to
transport and store tapes to a remote site.
Replication protects mission-critical remotely. However, the
high bandwidth and storage costs of keeping data online meant it
was reserved for the most critical applications and data.
IBM said only a small amount of unique data is sent across the
network at any time. This enables a large amount of data to be
transmitted with minimal bandwidth. The cost reduction means
electronic replication is now viable for all applications, IBM
said.
Native replication will be available September 4, 2009 and will
be an optional. additionally priced feature. A software upgrade
will be available for all existing TS7650G ProtecTIER Deduplication
Gateway and TS7650 ProtecTIER Deduplication Appliance
configurations.
