Sales of monitors on the up as the desktop continues its renaissance

With the desktop PC market undergoing a revival, new research from Context finds that display sales are now on the up too

‘The PC is dead’ – this proverb is now so commonly flaunted that it seems almost impossible to believe that sales of the archaic legacy devices are in fact on the up; however, recent data confirmed that the humble PC is witnessing a rebirth.

And now, figures out today suggest that it is not only the PC that is rising from the ashes but, perhaps unsurprisingly, peripherals too. Data from IT research firm, Context, showed that sales of desktop displays across Western Europe were up 14% year-on-year in the second-quarter of 2014.

The UK was one of the top contributors to the rise in demand with a year-on-year growth of 18%.

Lachlan Welsh, senior analyst at Context said that the enterprise growth could be attributed to extended PC lifecycles and XP reaching end-of-life.

“Consumer-targeted monitors have also experienced growth with budget conscious consumers able to acquire larger monitors at price points previously reserved for entry level devices,” he added.

Sales in Eastern Europe were less impressive with a 27% decline, however, with the on-going political turbulence in the Ukraine, markets of all kinds continue to feel the impact.

It will be interesting to see if PC and peripheral markets can maintain the same form of growth once the (slow but sure) transition away from XP is complete.
