2. Tim Berners-Lee, World Wide Web inventor; President of the Open Data Institute

Undoubtedly the most famous UK computer scientist, Berners-Lee has in the past year taken an increasingly high-profile global role as an advocate for the open web, net neutrality and online privacy, and an outspoken critic of government internet surveillance policies. As well as his evangelising of the web, he advises the government on open data as president and co-founder of the Open Data Institute.
