The spread of mobile working and the idea of bringing your own device to work has reached the SME sector creating opportunities for those pitching security to smaller firms.
Research from anti virus specialist AVG has shown that not only are more SMEs using smart phones and tablets but staff are more likely to be spending time away from the office.
The vendor's latest SMB landscape report showed that 10% of those small firms that were surveyed were using tablets, 19% Android phones and the same number Blackberries and on average 20% of businesses had staff that spent one day a week working remotely.
But the same respondents failed to perceive the threat that this greater flexibility was posing to their networks with only a quarter viewing the use of mobile phones in business as a security threat and only 16% are using antivirus or web security that can cover smart phones.
Chris McManus, AVG's UK and Ireland vice president of sales, said that the research showed the "inexorable drift" towards the greater use of mobile phones.
"SMBs need reminding that for all the economic uncertainty today's threat landscape is not standing still," he said.
