Resellers should encourage their best and brightest to shine on social media platforms rather than try to stem the adoption of tools like LinkedIn if they want to get the most out of online networking tools.
The temptation to block access to social networking sites has gone up in recent months not just because of security fears but because of perceptions that talented staff are using it as a shop window to get themselves better jobs.
But according to Wade Burgess, senior director for hiring solutions for Northern Europe at LinkedIn, employers should seize the chance to extend the corporate brand and the reputation for excellence by allowing staff to promote themselves and their skills.
"it is almost impossible to disconnect employees individual brand from the company brand and the company is a lot of individuals and a top down telling people what to do doesn't work," he said.
"If you have a great group of employees then people can extend the brand in a positive way and extend the company brand through profile views. They can even encourage people to 'work with us' and pull people back into the company brand," he added.
