Apple talks up iPad enterprise potential following IBM tie-up

Just weeks after striking a software and services relationship with IBM around its iOS platform Apple is predicting a rise in the deployment of iPads in the corporate sector

Apple is hoping that its recently struck relationship with IBM will deliver improved iPad sales into the enterprise market as it trys to reinvigorate a product category that has seen slowing growth in the last few quarters.

The vendor managed to break records with its third quarter numbers for the three months ended 30 June with revenues of $37.4bn and net profit of $7.7bn.

There were some channel inventory issues around both the iPad and iPhone, with a 500,000 reduction in the tablets being held in the channel from the end of the March quarter

The decent growth in revenue was helped by the sale of 35.2m iPhones, 15.3m iPads and 4.4m Macs, with the UK delivering double digit growth on the hardware front.

When it comes to tablets there is an expectation from Apple that there is much more market share to be won and it was the thinking behind forming a partnership with IBM.

"We forged a relationship with IBM to deliver a new class of mobile business solutions to enterprise customers around the world. We are working together to provide companies access to the power of Big Data analytics, right on every employee's iPhone or iPad," said Apple CEO Tim Cook on an analyst conference call.

"This is a radical step for Enterprise and opens up a large market opportunity for Apple but more importantly, it’s great for productivity and creativity of our enterprise customers," he added.
