The move by Blue Coat Systems to acquire cloud startup Elastica should be a positive for the channel as thw two firms bring together their partner bases.
Elastica had been courted by other vendors but the decision to go with an offer from Blue Coat was accepted because the management felt it would be a beneficial move that would help them develop their market proposition.
The $280m deal will give Blue Coat the opportunity to take Elastica's CloudSOC technology, which uses machine learning to identify unusual behaviour as well as providing users with an indication of the risks they face.
Blue Coat has reacted to the growth of the cloud and the increase in the security risks that come with using hosted applications and services.
"This acquisition gives Blue Coat customers access to Elastica’s CloudSOC, which brings an unprecedented level of elegance and innovation to something that is rapidly becoming a complex challenge for organizations to solve. As we evaluated many Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB) players, it was clear that Elastica’s technologies represent the future of the CASB space,” said Greg Clark, Blue Coat CEO.
The was also an upbeat assessment of what the tie-up would mean from the Elastica side of things with Rehan Jalil, CEO and founder of the firm giving it a thumbs up.
“Given the rapid acceleration of cloud adoption, our holistic data science-powered approach to cloud access security will enhance Blue Coat’s globally deployed security platform, empowering its customers to confidently and securely take advantage of the speed and agility that cloud applications offer,” he said.
From a channel point of view it is still early days to work out the impact of the deal, with the ink barely dry on the contract.
But there are signs that it is going to deliver benefits for the channel partners of both firms, particularly over the medium to long term.
"Following the acquisition of Elastica by Blue Coat Systems, we can assure our channel partners that their relationship with us won’t change in the short term. However, at the right time and where appropriate, we will evolve the partnerships to leverage the benefits of the acquisition so that the merger becomes an advantage for our partners," said Karl Driesen, VP EMEA, Elastica.
"Elastica and Blue Coat Systems have built up individual channel partner landscapes over many years. As we are both within the security market, these landscapes are very much aligned. Over the next few months we’ll be refining our strategies to make the most of this acquisition, and will be keeping our channel partners updated on this process," he said.
"Ultimately, we know this acquisition spells great news for the channel, as it will result in an holistic cloud security solution – one of the first of its kind in the industry," he added "We have a tremendous opportunity ahead of us."
