Symantec is talking up its ability to outflank rivals with the release of iuts endpoint protection product arguing that other alternatives are unable to be as proactive or provide customers with the reassurances that they can start to open up their network to more devices.
With the consumerisation of IT appearing to be unstoppable and mobile working increasing the strain on existing anti-virus systems is becoming untenable according to Symantec.
The Endpoint Protection 12 product is being seen by the vendor as a major step forward using a reputational scoring system to determine if attachments can be trusted and downloaded.
Ross Walker, director of distribution & small business at Symantec, said that it used a facility called Insight to get details from the millions of machines that used its software to determine which attachments posed a threat and which could be let through.
He said it improved the machine performance and reduced the management headache for security administrators, who were already facing major problems trying to cope with the growth of the bring your own computer movement and the introduction into the workplace of home technology.
"The feedback in the marketplace from customers is that it is almost impossible [to hold back consumerisation] and they want to know how they can manage corporate devices and the employee devices that range from laptops to tablets," he said.
He said that it was hoping resellers would step up to take advantage of the focus on endpoint and it had created microsites and material that would provide education around the products and the needs of the market.
"it is important for the reseller to be able to provide confidence to the customer no matter what products the end user is using," he added.
