Technology is playing a fundamental role helping firms climb out of the recession as the long heralded arrival of using IT in a strategic sense is embraced by boardrooms up and down the country.
Throughout the last few years, well before the bank meltdown and the subsequent collapse in the global economy, resellers had been telling customers that technology could not only make things work but could shape the way things operate.
A survey from Kcom has discovered that a third of businesses already view their IT departments as a source of innovation and strategy and 27% of those quizzed judged the performance of the department on business outcomes.
One of the key areas that has grown has been managed services, which is being used by 61% of firms as a way of turning to third party suppliers to fill the knowledge gaps.
Managed services is likely to grow as IT departments continue to cut costs with 83% of those asked by Kcom admitting that there had been cuts.
Paul Renucci, group executive director for Kcom, said that IT was taking its rightful place on the boardroom agenda and the message about the power of technology was managing to get through.
"Businesses have woken up to the fact that when IT is empowered to do so, it can deliver true strategic - and bottom line - value. I truly believe that IT departments can, and will play a tremendous part in helping organisations battle their way out of recession," he said.
