Ash cloud hits European PC sales

The volcanic ash cloud cast a shadow over the European PC market in April but has left pent-up demand which should start to feed through to sales this month.

Channel analyst Context revealed that revenues via distribution across the region's top 14 economies fell 14.3% in April compared to the same month a year ago while unit shipments dropped 13.8%.

The Netherlands was the hardest hit with sales revenues down 24.7% but the UK was the most impacted of the three biggest markets in Europe, dropping 17.1% as Germany and France sunk 6.2% and 9.3% respectively.

"April was an unusual month for the European PC business but demand is still there and we expect to see a significant rebound in business during May as delayed orders are fulfilled," said Context senior analyst Marie-Christine Pygott.

Commercial customers were hit harder than consumers as business unit sales declined 14.5% in April compared to the month before, with consumer sales dropping by 12.6%.

Last month's volcanic eruption of Eyjafjallajökull in Iceland forced the closure of airports across Europe causing disruption to travellers, cargo and supply chains.
