The rather silly comments made by Sir Philip Green yesterday that government should be buying IT kit direct from multi-national vendors really demonstrates why he should stick to selling cut priced clothes and food.

For a start, it is questionable whether the public sector could get a better deal from the A-brands, some senior channel figures reckon manufacturers manage up the margin over time and therefore prefer this reseller-less supply chain.

But there was also a fairly rigorous and delayed tender process undertaken by Buying Solutions last year that determined suppliers that made it onto the three-year £6bn Commodity IT Hardware and Software framework agreement.

For those that were not involved or do not remember the deal, there were two major vendors that were noticeable by their absence from the final list of suppliers, namely HP and Dell.

So clearly the largest professional buying group in the public sector didn't think HP or Dell warranted a place in the agreement, so why does Sir Philip? Maybe he has been spending too much time in the sun with Kate Moss.
