The now annual deadline for submitting this year's - the 2009/10 - Self Assessment tax return, albeit on paper, is only five days away. If you are one of the 9 million taxpayers that needs to complete a Self Assessment return and you don't submit your return by 31 October, you'll be sent an automatic, non negotiable, £100 penalty.

Of course, HM Revenue & Customs wants everyone to file online. It's faster, more accurate and naturally, much cheaper for them to process. If online filing is for you, consider yourself granted an extra three months to submit your return as you'll have until 31 January 2011.

Filing online is quite easy - just navigate to http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/online/ and hit 'register'. Any problems - call HMRCs helpline on 0845 9000 444.
