As is the custom, the Government has accepted the recommendations of the Low Pay Commission in terms of the new rate for the National Minimum Wage.

This means that from 1 October 2011:
- the adult rate will increase by 15p to £6.08 per hour
- the rate for 18-20 year olds will rise by 6p to £4.98 per hour
- the rate for 16-17 year olds will increase by 4p to £3.68 per hour
- and the rate for apprentices will rise by 10p to £2.60 per hour
Interestingly, the LPC wants the Government to raise awareness of the NMW as it applies to those undertaking internships, work experience and volunteering opportunities. The LPC also wants HMRC, as the enforcer of the NMW, to be more proactive.
