Five minute interview: Ian Wells, Veeam

An interview with Ian Wells, of Veeam

What is the best/worst advice you have received and from whom?

Never say never ! I've heard that from a lot of people, although the most notable was James Bond in 1983 (he added "again" to the end, though...).

What is the best book you've ever read?

Hope is not a Strategy, by Rick Page: it gave me a lot of valuable insights into how to sell complex products and services, of which virtualisation is definitely one!

Tell us something most people do not know about you

I play in a Brass Band: I'm sure quite a lot more people know about that now.

What temptation can you not resist?

Wine Gums - much better than chocolate, since if nothing else they last longer.

What is your most elusive goal?

Not having to work - because let's face it, there are always bills to pay ...

Where is the one place you'd like to visit before you die - and why?

Outer space! The preserve of the exclusive few, assuming Richard Branson gets all his plans in order. I'm not sure NASA will take me on any more...

Which bit of technology would you want with you if you were stranded on a desert island - and why?

An iPad and a solar generator, to help me keep in touch and entertained. Although I suppose it would need to be the 3G model.

Who helped you get to where you are today?

Everyone! I don't believe that people get to places on their own - we're all the product of the interactions we've had with everyone we've ever met.

What was your first car and how does it compare with what you drive now?

My first car was an Opel Kadett (the forerunner to the Vauxhall Astra, for the young ones out there). Compared to what I drive now, there's no comparison - my current car is actually made of metal and high-quality plastics, not newspapers, and increasingly less fibreglass.

What do you believe in most?

Success - for myself and for others!

Do you have any pets? If so, what are they and what are their names?

We have a bit of a menagerie at the moment: we have Buster the cat, Ben the guniea pig and the three fish with no names (not in the Clint Eastwood sense)!

If you could be someone else for a day, who would you be and why?

David Cameron - why not: if you're going to go for someone, the leader of a major European country isn't a bad place to start!

Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?

Colonel Gaddafi at the moment - quite apart from his speeches, I don't think he's made himself many friends!

Why are you good at your job?

I make sure I lead by example, which in sales is pretty important.

If you were shipwrecked, who would you like to have with you and why?

My wife and kids: then there'd be no real need to get back in hurry!

Name three items (smaller than a fridge) that you would like to have with you if you were shipwrecked

An iPad (3G model, naturally), a solar generator and a mobile phone - then I could call for help and keep myself entertained while I waited for it. As long as I was shipwrecked somewhere sunny, anyway.

If you could be any animal for a day, what would you be?

A cat - they get to laze around and do nothing and nobody keeps telling them to get up and work!

If a grizzly bear and a silverback gorilla decided to have a no holds barred fight, which would you put your money on and why?

Grizzly bear - even the name sounds scarier, and I'm pretty sure a full-size bear would have the weight advantage.

Do you prefer cities or the countryside? Explain why

I like to live in the countryside and visit the city - you get the best of both worlds, solitude and nature with all the urban entertainment!

Describe your perfect night out

I'd have a boozy night out with good food and good company: luckily, that's pretty easy to achieve!

What would be your perfect holiday?

One where I can relax and get away from it all: that's less easy these days, but still doable if you know where to go.

Sum up the IT channel in one sentence

The IT channel is fantastic for Veeam! (Sorry, I couldn't resist...)
