John Riley

John Riley was Managing Editor of Computer Weekly, responsible for helping develop strategic direction and for building in-depth relationships with the corporate IT user community. He looks to identify business value from IT, ensure that the user voice is heard in industry and government, and encourage reader involvement in charitable activities. 

In the mid 1990s he set up Computer Weekly’s long standing club for IT Directors, the CW500 Club, which meets monthly. He is active within the IT scene, being a Fellow of the British Computer Society, a management committee member of the BCS user oriented Elite group, and a Liveryman of the City of London livery body, the Information Technologists Company.

He is a Council member of two parliamentary/industry groups: the Parliamentary Information Technology Committee (Pitcom); and Parliamentary/IT action group, Eurim. He is a member of the Strategic Supplier Relationships Group (SSRG), a consortium of 11 user groups to aid user/supplier relationships. He is also a board committee member of Byte Night, the annual IT industry charity sleepover, and is a founder external advisor to de Montfort’s University’s Centre for Computing and Social Responsibility. He is also a Fellow of the Society of Arts (FRSA), and a Freeman of the City of London.

He has been with Computer Weekly for 25 years, and prior to his current role, ran an IT related book publishing, newsletter and high priced report operation for Computer Weekly. He has a PhD in Mediterranean Roman Archaeology from Manchester University and is also a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. Before joining Computer Weekly he was a Research Fellow in Archaeological Science at Southampton University.

John Riley left Computer Weekly in May 2008.
