Microsoft re-releases security bulletin MS14-045

By Warwick Ashford

Microsoft has re-released a software security update that was withdrawn earlier in August following reports it could trigger a blue screen of death error screen and leave computers stuck in a reboot loop.

Security bulletin MS14-045 fixes three privately reported vulnerabilities in the Microsoft Windows kernel that could allow elevation of privilege.

MS14-045 applies to Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, as well as Windows Vista and Windows Server 2003.

While for many the update installed without difficulty after its initial release, some reported system crashes and problems restarting their systems.

The problem was not detected in testing because it was only triggered on systems that had one or more OpenType font (OTF) files installed in non-standard font directories.

More on Microsoft security

“We encourage customers to install the security update as soon as possible,” Microsoft said in a blog post, adding that customers with automatic updates enabled do not need to take any action.

Microsoft also recommended that anyone who did install the earlier update should uninstall it, before installing the new one.

However, the Microsoft support site lists a continuing issue with fonts linked to resources, as well as a problem with displaying windows in some applications, which Microsoft is still working to resolve.
