Barclays has named Michael Harte as the replacement for recently departed global chief operations and technology officer, Shaygan Kheradpir.

Harte joins from Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA), where he was responsible for operations and technology since 2006.

Kheradpir left to become CEO at Juniper Networks after two years transforming the digital strategy at Barclays.

Barclays recently lost its CIO for Europe and the Middle East, Anthony Watson, who was appointed CIO of global clothing and sportswear company Nike.

Harte transformed the CBA into a digital powerhouse, including moving its online banking service into the Amazon Web Services cloud in 2012.

Barclays CEO, Antony Jenkins, said: “Given Michael’s wealth of experience, he is ideally placed to lead the transformation of the Barclays Operations and Technology function and its continued focus on customer innovation, digital services and process automation. Technology is at the heart of our transformation agenda and will play a critical role in helping us achieve our goal of becoming the go-to bank.”

According to one source Barclays had tried to recruit Harte in the past.
