Shell has simplified and standardised business processes, focused on refining and marketing activities, through a global SAP upgrade.
The oil and gas company's downstream business, which is outside oil and gas exploration and production, has completed an SAP upgrade in 35 countries, which impacts 29,000 users.
The Downstream One project, delivered with support from IBM and SAP, includes business processes for all operations from manufacturing to marketing and sales of oil products.
Simplified business models, standardised processes, roles and responsibilities mean staff can
now access the same system, with common data, common processes and a uniform basis for
reporting.
Shell will also refresh IT, including the implementation of IBM Power 7 Series (P780) servers to
deliver greater computing power and improve IT efficiency.
The programme will be complete with roll-out in final major markets of Australia and the US fuels business in 2014.
Gerhard Oswald, member of the Executive Board of SAP, said this is one of the largest SAP application upgrade projects in the world. “Our success was only achievable through the great teamwork among Shell, IBM and our own experts utilising the ‘Near Zero Down Time’ approach to ensure total business downtime criteria of 48 hours was achieved.”
