AstraZeneca has appointment David Smoley as its new chief information officer (CIO).
Smoley will succeed AstraZeneca’s current CIO Jon Kirby, who will leave the company at the end of April. Kirby became CIO of pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca in 2010, managing a $1bn IT budget with operations in over 100 countries.
Smoley joins AstraZeneca from Flextronics International where he was senior vice president and CIO. He has previously worked at Honeywell and General Electric, where he held the position of director and CIO for GE Power Controls in Barcelona.
“David is a strong technologist and comes to AstraZeneca with a reputation for implementing leading-edge technologies to solve business challenges,” said David Smith, executive vice president at AstraZeneca operations.
As CIO, David will head up the AstraZeneca Information Systems Leadership Team and will be responsible for developing the next phase of the IS strategy and long term vision, said the company in a statement.
The news follows the company having recently opted to switch its outsourcing model to one that encourages co-operation with suppliers after its large, outcome-based deal with IBM failed to deliver what was expected.
Smoley will join AstraZeneca in April and will be based in London.
