EDF app enables smartphones to snap meter readings

Energy supplier EDF has released an app that enables customers to submit meter readings by using the camera on a smartphone

Energy supplier EDF has made an app that enables customers to submit meter readings by using the camera on a smartphone.

Customers can take a snap of their electricity and gas meters and send it directly to EDF, which will automatically update their account.

Martin Lawrence, managing director of energy sourcing and customer supply at EDF Energy, said: “This is the latest in a line of innovations planned for our popular smartphone app.

“We know how busy many people are, so we’ve developed the Photo-Meter functionality to make it as easy as possible for customers to submit readings for their electricity and gas meters in just a few seconds.

“By providing regular meter readings, customers can get more accurate bills, and only pay for the energy they use.”

Energy firms are investing heavily in IT to meet government targets for smart metering. Projects aim to help consumers and businesses better understand and control their energy use. This will reduce wastage and carbon emissions.

IDC Energy Insights expects utility companies in western Europe to spend $10.5bn on IT this year. Software investments will increase the most in the next five years, growing by 7.2% each year.
