NatWest customers hit by further online banking issues

By Jennifer Scott

NatWest is today facing another significant outage, leaving customers unable to access online banking or use their debit cards.

Customers have been complaining about the problems, with a number of readers contacting Computer Weekly to highlight the issue.

“[I’m] so angry at NatWest,” wrote one reader. “Its online banking is down and no UK debit cards are currently working.”

The official NatWest customer service Twitter feed admitted there were problems, but did not go into detail of the cause behind them.

“Some customers may have issues with their online banking and using their debit cards at the moment,” it posted. “Working as hard as we can to resolve… We'll post updates as soon as we have more information.”

Computer Weekly contacted the bank, which is part of the Royal Bank of Scotland group, but a spokesman said he would have to call us back before giving any confirmation.

Another technical outage would be a disaster for the RBS Group, which has only just recovered from last month's software fault.

The glitch in the CA7 batch process scheduler ended with 12 million customer accounts being frozen, leaving them unable to access funds for at least a week while RBS, NatWest and the Ulster Bank manually updated all the account balances.

We will update you on the situation once we receive more information.
