Adobe releases Flash Player 11 and AIR 3 for video and enterprise apps

By Jenny Williams

Adobe has updated its Flash Player and AIR software to support video and data-centric enterprise applications across desktop and mobile devices.

Adobe's Flash Player 11 and AIR 3 software support HD video quality across devices, such as Apple's iPhone and iPad. Other features include captive runtime for independent application updates, video content protection and 64-bit support on Linux, Mac OS and Window.

Adobe said the 3D capabilities of the new releases will be useful for developers of data-driven enterprise applications that require back-end system integration across devices.

Danny Winokur, vice-president and general manager of platform at Adobe, said Flash is a better way of developing data-driven apps while HTML5 tools are better for general-purpose mobile applications.

"Flash offers the best way for content owners to deliver their most demanding experiences - including games, premium video and sophisticated data-driven apps - to all of their users, while HTML5 tools - such as Adobe Edge and Dreamweaver - are ideal for building interactive web pages, rich ads, branded microsites and general-purpose mobile applications," he said.

AIR-native extensions allow developers to integrate AIR applications with other business software and make use of technologies, such as near-field communications (NFC), access to device data and magnetometers.

"AIR-native extensions add support for unique device features and native code libraries, empowering developers to freely choose the right mix of Flash, HTML5 and native code to provide powerful user experiences across PCs and devices," said Adobe.

Flash Player 11 and AIR 3 will be available in October 2011. Open-source app development framework, Flash Builder and Flex, will support the new Adobe releases by the end of the year.

Adobe expects one billion devices to support Adobe AIR by the end of 2015.
