David Clarke, CEO of BCS, the chartered institute for IT, has been awarded an MBE in the Queen's New Year's Honours list for services to the industry.

"I am absolutely delighted to be honoured in this way. I am very proud to be part of the IT industry which is one of the most exciting professions of our time. It truly is at the heart of much of our society today," he said.

Clarke became CEO of the institute in 2002. During his time the organisation's membership rose from 38,000 to 70,000 and sales grew by 150%, said the body.

Prior to joining BCS, Clarke was head of Trinity Mirror's Digital Media Division. He has also worked as director at Virgin and held senior positions at Hewlett Packard, Digital Equipment Corporation and Compaq Computers.
