Sun to distribute and support open-source database

Antony Savvas

Sun Microsystems is to distribute and support the open-source PostgreSQL database.

Sun said it will integrate PostgreSQL into its Solaris operating system and will begin offering support services to businesses running the database.

When Sun updates its main Solaris 10 operating system next year, Sun will bundle PostgreSQL with it. The pricing for database support is expected to be included in the cost of a Solaris support contract.

In addition to the PostgreSQL move, Sun has also announced it will add its Xen virtualisation software to the company’s OpenSolaris open-source project.

Sun intends eventually to make all its software open-source following the decision to make Solaris open-source earlier this year.
