A new version of the OpenOffice.org collaboration suite has been released in advance of a main upgrade expected later this year.
OpenOffice.org is supported by Sun Microsystems and other suppliers, and is designed to be an open-source alternative to Microsoft’s Office collaboration suite.
The latest upgrade of the software, version 1.1.5, has been launched ahead of version 2.0. Version 1.1.5 can import OpenDocument-based documents, spreadsheets and presentations.
The OpenDocument format is an XML document standard based on Oasis (Organisation for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards).
The standard is designed to enable the free exchange of data between OpenDocument-compliant software. IBM and Red Hat are among the firms that support the standard.
The latest version also includes fixes for previously reported bugs and security glitches.
