Members of the House of Lords have been briefed by Computer Weekly on computer and other problems that afflicted the Chinook Mk2 helicopter at the time of a notorious fatal crash on the Mull of Kintyre in June 1994.

The briefing was held at the request of Lord Chalfont, chairman of the Mull of Kintyre Group of senior MPs and Lords. The group wants the Government to set aside a verdict of gross negligence on the pilots of the Chinook Mk2 that crashed on the Mull.

During the briefing, peers were interested to know why the Chinook Mk2 had gone into operational service after an independent contractor EDS-Scicon had found 485 anomalies in the helicopter's safety-critical Full Authority Digital Engine Control system.

Cross-party members of the Mull of Kintyre Group are to request a meeting with the prime minister Tony Blair.
