A recent survey commissioned by email management company, Mimecast, has found that corporate email accounts are being shunned by those aged under 25 in favour of personal email accounts when it comes to the sending of business email.
Why? Users hate being hamstrung by the restrictions that companies and their email providers place on what can be sent. Further, users hate having the sizes of their mailboxes constrained.
The online survey of 2400 users (1080 UK, US 805, Canada 272 and South Africa 300) found that 85% of under 25's use personal email accounts for work email; 36% of incoming email to work inboxes was not work related; that over 300 work related emails are sent per person via personal email accounts; and that on average, half of these emails contain attachments.
The net effect of this is to put corporate security at risk as business information is released into the wild. Of course, this presumes that the information is only for internal consumption as anything sent to third parties is, by definition, out in the public domain.
If businesses want to increase security of their private information, they may well have to enforce an email policy and increase mail box sizes.
