HP has thrown down the gauntlet to Tier 1 storage rivals, claiming it can help customers escape fragmented architectures and complex environments with a single architecture that encompasses primary storage, data retention and data protection.

Outlining a series of announcements at HP Discover 2012 in Frankfurt, David Scott, senior vice president and general manager for HP storage, said they delivered on the vendor's commitment to 'polymorphic simplicity'. This involves providing a single architecture for primary storage and for information retention and information protection spanning the enterprise and the mid market.
The vendor claims it has opened up the mid-market to channel partners with the introduction of HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 which "delivers Tier 1 storage for less than €30,000".
Scott said the announcement of the HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 "extends the target addressable market into a new 11bn market, obliterating the traditional barriers between high end storage and mid range".
He claimed it could reduce customers' management overhead by 90% and their capacity requirement by 50% by performing what he dubbed "a storage liposuction".
HP also announced HP StoreOnce 2000 and 4000 Backup that it claims can perform backup operations up to three times faster than the closest competitive system at a 35% lower cost.
In addition, the vendor unveiled a scalable platform for object and file data access, known as HP StoreAll, which provides a simplified environment for big data retention and cloud storage, along with Express Query, which integrates a NoSQL database and scan files 100,000 times faster than existing file system search methods.
HP enterprise group EMEA Vice President for channel business partners, Alessandra Brambilla, said the move into the mid-market was a great opportunity for channel partners.
"The product set is tooled for their market," she claimed.
