EMC shuffles board to look for growth

EMC has moved the head of VMware and promoted its CFO as it looks to get more growth and keep the storage and virtualisation vendor on track to meet its targets

EMC has played a game of musical chairs in the boardroom with the head of VMware Paul Maritz being moved to a strategy role in the main company and Pat Gelsinger stepping into the hot seat running the virtualisation business.

The changes in personnel accompanied the second quarter results and confirmed the destination of Maritz, after speculation started about his future earlier this week.

The firm described the decision to make the changes, which also included the promotion of David Goulden to COO from the position of executive vice president and CFO. Gelsinger had been president and COO of information infrastructure products. Maritz becomes chief strategist reporting into the CEO Joe Tucci.

Tucci said Maritz would, "look across our technology strategy with a particular focus on Big Data and the next generation of cloud-oriented applications that will be built on top of these foundations.”

He added that the personnel changes had been made to take the company to its next stage of growth.

In terms of the numbers EMC announced preliminary Q2 results with revenues of $5.31bn, up 10% over Q2 2011. The vendor stated that it is still on track to deliver its revenue of $22bn for the full year.
