City watchers have raised expectations that Sage could be the target of a takeover stoking interest in the software firm.

The vendor has been linked with M&A deals in the past, often with an expectation Sage will be involved, but the latest speculation comes on the back of consolidation in the software market following the takeover of Misys by Vista Equity Partners earlier this month.

Analysts quoted in the newspapers this morning expect that Sage will be able to improve its fortunes by controlling costs or seeing the share price rise because of potential takeover interest.

The talk of a takeover comes at a time when there are no signs of a buyer for the firm or an interest from the vendor in selling up.
