The mid market is the sweet spot for resellers pitching the cloud as smaller and larger firms both take their time adopting the technology.

The lack of in-house skills is keeping small firms from taking steps into the hosted world and fears over security and data integrity are keeping larger enterprises in the slow lane when it comes to cloud, according to research from Claranet.

As well as revealing the stumbling blocks preventing certain customers from adopting the technology the managed services provider also discovered that the vast majority of cloud roll-outs (79%) have been of the private or hybrid type rather than public.

"Smaller companies may lack in-house IT expertise to manage the services themselves, for large enterprises there are issues around risk assessment, compliance and purchasing, increasing the length of the procurement process," said Michel Robert, managing director at Claranet UK.

Robert also pointed out cultural issues which were holding back some firms, particularly in those operations where traditional methods did not allow for that type of flexible deliver of data and services.

"Medium-sized organisations tend to have some in-house knowledge and skills; they also tend to have less bureaucracy to slow them down than larger organisations. It is these factors that I see as accounting for their faster rates of adoption," he added.
