High-performance network and storage distie Stordis is to open up a UK office, having previously serviced the country from its Stuttgart HQ, and will shortly sign a new distribution agreement with Emulex to help crack the market.

The firm has also appointed former Gateway server sales man Andrew Jones from Acer to look after its existing reseller base and add to its reseller and vendor tally in the UK. It currently claims to have between 50 and 60 active partners here.

Stordis CEO Alexander Jeffries said that although the distie had never a geographic focus before, growth in demand for high-performance kit in virtualisation installations meant it needed to do more hand-holding.

"We could handle the channel quite well from Germany, but we couldn't go and see them, looking at the revenues we are starting to do here it was an easy decision to make," he said.

Jeffries said the addition of Emulex to its stable, which includes vendors such as Dot Hill, Myricom and QLogic, would "change our focus somewhat".

Jeffries explained that Emulex's technology would help partners overcome networking bottlenecks, "one of the most restrictive factors on the effective use of server virtualisation".

"10Gb Ethernet suddenly goes from expensive and niche to something where performance becomes a cost advantage," he said, and would open up Stordis to new markets.

"Longer term we believe all data centre storage is headed towards high speed Ethernet for reasons of cost, flexibility and obvious consolidation advantages," he added.

Emulex international vice president Adam Winkelmann added: "[Stordis] can offer our channel partners true technical understanding, market knowledge and fast-focused service. This speeds up deals and delivers a better end-result for both resellers and customers."
