SAP has been in the vanguard of those talking of the importance of sustainability, even when the recession took green off the agenda, and has shown that saving the planet can save serious amounts of money.
Research carried out by MicroScope last year indicated that green was rising on the list of customer priorites and it might climb even higher when the sum of SAP's €170m in savings sinks in.
The vendor has been able to make those savings since 2008 and now as a result of several iniatives designed to cut greenhouse gas emissions and cut the vendor's carbon footprint.
SAP has saved the money through a combination of measures including encouraging staff to cut down on air travel and by getting its electricity from greener sources.
The vendor uses its own software to measure sustainability and has over the last couple of years encouraged resellers to follow its example to help customers save some money.
"On one side, our sustainability solutions help our customers run better and ourselves enter into new software markets. On the other side, our own operations run more cost efficiently while we are positively impacting employee motivation," said Peter Graf, chief sustainability officer at SAP.
