The gap between traditional IT and specific technology designed for vertical markets is narrowing opening up potential fresh opportunities for resellers.

According to Gartner there is widespread convergence between operational technology and IT occuring across a large number of sectors, including healthcare, defence, energy, mining and oil and gas, as the need for unified system management becomes a user ambition.

Ktistian Steenstrup, research vice president and Gartner fellow, said that operational technology had changed, "so that the underlying technology - such as platforms, software, security and communications - is becoming more like IT systems".

He added that as well as reducing costs through better management there was also the chance to reduce risks "from reducing malware intrustion and internal errors".

Although early days the analyst house predicted that there would be an impact on the role of the CIO as that position widened to embrace responsibility for all the data coming both from operational technology as well as the IT systems.

"CIOs have a great opportunity to lead their enterprises in exploiting information flows from digital technologies. By playing this role, they can better enable decisions that optimise business processes and performance," said Steenstrup.
