In reaction to recent IDC research which predicted that small businesses would increase spending on IT by 5.5% between now and 2014 some in the industry have raised fears for what this could mean for data.
The expectation is that buying fresh IT will be covered by savings made from sweating the assets but that could leave creaking technology at risk.
"Many will continue to extend the life of existing IT investment to save money in the short term but older equipment has an increased risk of system failure, leaving SMBs wide open to lost revenue, lost productivity and lost customers," said Laurent Dedenis, executive vice president EMEA at Acronis.
"Recent research carried out by Acronis found that two thirds (63%) of SMBs take a day or more to recover from system downtime. Only 10% of SMBs questioned are confident that they could recover their systems within an hour after a disaster such as a virus attack," he added.
