DSG International has updated the market on the ongoing restructuring of its troubled UK business and thrown down the gauntlet to the nascent Best Buy Carphone Warehouse JV by committing to open 25 large-format megastores by Christmas 2010

The electronics and IT retail giant will add 60 combined Currys and PC World stores, 12 standalone superstores and also plans to open 3 new stores in its High Street CurrysDigital strand.

DSGi said it had identified approximately 70 megastore locations across the country.

"The new store formats are popular with customers, particularly the megastores and the combined two-in-one stores," said chief executive John Browett.

"The next 12 months will be another busy period as we roll out the improved proposition and introduce more services to more of our customers," he added.

DSGi claimed that the gross profit uplift in its new format stores was up 20% on average, and that early indications suggested trading in the reformatted stores was also strong.

It has also made progress with its £200m restructuring drive and completed the review of its European business, ditching some unprofitable eastern European ops and scaling back dramatically in some western markets.
