Microsoft has unveiled its UK pricing for its Office 2010 application with the prices decreasing with a free taster on offer to entice users to choose the software.
Mirroring announcements already made in the US, where prices were pitched at lower levels than before, the numbers on British price tags from June will also reflect a strategy to grow market share by making the cost of the software more reasonable.
In addition to price reductions the replacement for Microsoft Works, Office Starter 2010, is a pre-installed free product that provides users with new PCs the experience of using Office interface encouraging people to take an option of an upgrade getting the product key to get hold of a full version.
The number of suites has also been reduced from five to three with Office Home and Student costing £89.99 for a product key card, Home and Business costing £189.99 and the Professional version product key retailing for £299.99. The standard version of Office 2007 had set users back £429.99.
Chris Adams, Office product manager for Microsoft UK, said that there had been some calls from SMEs with the previous product to make the entry point more affordable.
"We needed to make that middle ground really easy for businesses to get it," he said.
He added that it had reduced the SKUs to make life easier for both users and resellers.
"It was quite complicated for a user to get Office with a PC so there was a customer part of that but at the same time it makes it a lot easier for resellers to sell it as well they don't have to take customers through a grid of options," he said.
