Cloud specialist ThinkGrid has taken the wraps off a hosted storage service that provides a range of data tools that are designed to help those struggling to keep on top of their data.

As well as providing the option to simply host data the service offers the option for remote back-up and disaster recovery.

David Pratt, COO at ThinkGrid, said that as well as appealing to the current customer demand of shifting purchases from cap-ex to op-ex there were other benefits to flexibility for those companies that only wanted to pay for the storage they used.

“Cloud storage is going to be one of these very good services for the channel because they have all sold storage and it is a great way of getting in front of the customer,” he said.

He added that is was basing the service on the Mezeo Cloud Storage Platform which had SSL encryption and user concerns about security were understandable but could be tackled with the technology.

Research from Symantec last week revealed that many companies are failing to keep on top of disaster recovery plans leaving themselves exposed to risks.

One source operating in the business intelligence market said it was a “natural development” to start to combine storage as a service with BI tools that could provide data warehousing features.

“If I could get my hands on a couple of data centres then it would be tempting to start it myself,” he added.
