The increasing number of software vendor audits is pushing more customers towards Software Asset Management (SAM) as they try to remain compliant with their licensing requirements.
There have been warnings sounded at the start of the year that the impact of the recession would force vendors to take more action to prevent lost revenue through under licensing and counterfeit software.
Last week Oracle’s results reflected the situation for many with new licenses being down 6% but existing revenue from the installed base increasing by almost double that percentage.
Matt Fisher, director of corporate marketing at Frontrange, said that vendors had to protect revenue and making more audits was an inevitable result of that.
But he said that users were finding through using SAM that they not only could keep on the right side of the law but also had the potential to save money.
“The compliance efforts are increasing and the major software vendors are not selling as may new licenses as they would like,” he said.
“But some people are buying licenses they don’t need, which might have been purchased centrally, and by using SAM and getting advice on volume licensing they can be make agreements from a position of strength,” he added.
The Software Industry Research Board has put a date in the diary for 12 May for an event that is designed to inform customers about SAM and the benefits of keeping on top of the software estate.
In a statement accompanying the launch of that event Andy Burton, chairman of the SIRB, said that the number of vendor customer checks was increasing and their were serious legal risks for those that ignored the issue.
