IT spending seen as key plank of post-recession strategy

According to a Gartner survey the majority of CEOs 62% of senior executives believe that IT has to be a key part of the post-recession strategy and view technology as more important than cost cutting in terms of the impact on operations.

The priorities have changed as well with the question of what matters this time last year being cost cutting but now CEOs want 2010 to be a year of returning to revenue growth.

“A switch in focus from cost to revenue will reshape business change priorities and in turn will impact the IT project portfolio," said Mark Raskino, research vice president and Gartner fellow.

"CIOs should expect re-prioritisation of some key IT projects during 2010 as the business cycle starts to turn,” he added.

A healthy proportion of executives, 43%, plan to increase their spending with 45% ruling out making any cuts.

One of the consequences will be a move by employers to retain and seek skilled personnel which taps into recent figures that show the IT jobs market in terms of both temporary and full time positions.
