Ballmer and Bartz need to find out if they have a future together

Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer has been hinting about a deal with Yahoo's search business again.

Transcripts of a media industry conference in New York published by the Wall Street Journal indicate Ballmer is still keen on a partnership with Yahoo.

Am I alone in thinking it is high time he just sat down with his Yahoo counterpart Carol Bartz and thrashed this thing out once and for all, now that Jerry Yang is out of the way?

At least Ballmer has admitted that the attraction of Yahoo's search business is about boosting the size of the audience for Microsoft search.

"It's not about Yahoo's technology. It's really about getting the pooled volume, because you actually can improve your product faster if you have more users," Ballmer said.

I think with the current economic climate, this is a good thing for both companies.
