Public sector IT workers have a 50:50 chance of success in private sector

I have been blogging a quick survey about whether public sector IT staff have what it takes to succeed in the private sector.

This followed a survey from the FT that suggested that 52% of private sector companies do not think public sector workers, in general (not specifically IT), are up to the job in the private sector.

I put a quick Google questionnaire together to see whether this applied to IT and got 28 respondents.

Exactly 14 said public sector IT staff are not equipped to work in the private sector while the other 14 said they were. Similar to the FT findings although a tiny sample. Perhaps the split was just between public sector respondents and those in the private sector.

I really want some comments from people that have worked in both sectors so we can really understand the main differences, if any. Please let me know your thoughts by filling in the comment section below.

Having worked in both sectors following leaving the Armed Forces in 1999 - private sector to 2004 as a perm and public sector (defence) 2004-2011, I'm intrigued as to what possible grounds public sector IT staff, or those who have contracted in the public sector are deemed unsuitable for the private sector. Granted, there may be some sector specific factors at play here where those who are more involved in say, the service delivery side may need to have a greater awareness of the sector that they're working in, but you could just as easily turn that around on its head and say that those coming from an investment banking background wouldnt be suitable for working on an NHSpfIT project. For what its worth, I think it has nothing whatever to do with who'se background is deemed suitable and has everything to do with wage inflation. How many of those on Tier1 visas or otherwise are deemed unsuitable? I would venture a damn sight less. Havent those who replied to the questionnaire ever heard of transferable skills?
