Now that Release Candidate 0 is available, I guess people will start looking at what Windows Server 2008 has to offer.
As with any new OS, the biggest pain will be application incompatibility. Microsoft does say any Windows Server 2003 application should run in "compatibility" mode. But there are so many changes to security and the Windows Registry that some things are bound to produce unexpected results. I recently asked Windows compatibility testing company ChangeBase to look at Windows Server 2008. Its Aok tool reported 10,000 configuration changes, which could cause a Windows Server 2003 application to behave unexpectedly.
From Thursday November 1st, software suppliers will be able to submit applications for testing under Microsoft's Certified for Windows Server 2008 programme. If our tests are anything to go by, software suppliers are going to be very busy.
