Don't drink and drive - Don't email and connive

When you pull your Christmas cracker and put on the funny hat remember that while the joke inside may not be funny at least it passed the scrutiny of the thought police.

How did you do with your emails this year?

It's easy to slip into careless habits so here are a few tips to remind you what NOT to do for 2008...

  • Emails should be considered as permanent.
  • Emails should be considered as public. They are copied, forwarded and, in some organisations, they are monitored by nosey IT staff. They can get out into the public domain very easily as a brussel sprout bouncing off of your plate.
  • Emails are about as private as sending a postcard.
  • Emails can be produced as evidence in court.
  • Do not put something in an email that you would not be willing to justify in the future, if requested.

Everyone should be aware of and familiar with their organisational email policy. It can normally be found on the intranet and/or in the employee handbook.

These tips come thanks to Marc Powell at Emailogic who does a grand job if you want your staff to stay safe - While you shouldn't drink and drive, its against the law - you shouldn't email and connive because it may be against your career!

But speaking of conniving, how does one keep one's geeks from getting up to no good? Even the fairly tech-savvy executive or administrator is at the mercy of the prying eyes of their IT staff. When will there be some way to track what THOSE fellows are up to?

Talk about breeding paranoia... tick off IT, and you take your professional LIFE in your hands!
