Air transport companies, with over 1000 staff, dedicate 2.5% of their turnover on IT & telecom products and services.  This matches that for all large UK organisations.  For smaller sized concerns the proportions are notably smaller in the air transport sector.

Employment agencies' largest spend category is staff which represents 60% of IT & telecom budgets.  Computer services and telecom services expenditure each contribute just over 15%.  Between them, hardware and software form the balance of a little under 10%.

Health services organisations' IT & telecom spend per employee increases with number of staff.  For the smallest institutions it is £850 rising to some £1,500 for the largest grouping.  These figures are a factor of 2.5 smaller than those for the UK as a whole.

Motor trade firms spend almost half their IT & telecom budgets on computer services and over a quarter on telecom services.  Such companies spend less than 10% on IT & telecom staff which is one of the lowest proportions in the UK economy.

Information and communication companies incorporating computer programming & consultancy, telecommunications, software publishing and information services sectors are the highest IT & telecom spenders.  Each of these sectors has an outlay in excess of £30,000 per employee.  They are followed by a grouping of financial services institutions where the outlay is above £16,000.  The average for the 80 sectors covering the whole of the UK is in the region £4,000 per employee.  At the bottom of the rankings are food & beverage services firms spending under £500.

IT & Telecom Spend - Motor Manufacturers

Motor manufacturers' IT & telecom spend as a proportion of turnover is half that for all UK organisations.  However, for large enterprises with 1000+ employees, it is less than a third.  Whilst large concerns in the whole of the economy have a much higher ratio compared with their smaller sized counterparts, with motor manufacturers the opposite is the case.

Food manufacturers and beverages manufacturers each invest around 1% of their turnover on IT & telecoms.  There are however notable differences by size of company.  With food manufacturers, the largest firms devote twice as much in comparison with smaller concerns.  In the case of beverages manufacturers, it is the smaller companies that have the much larger spend ratios.

Specialised construction companies - covering activities such as demolition, electrics, plumbing and plastering - overall have a spend as a proportion of turnover which approaches twice that for buildings construction firms.  This becomes a factor of three when comparing organisations with 1000+ staff.
